The southern slopes of Grizedale valley and the North West Water reservoirs at Barnacre are rich in insect life such as grasshoppers and tiger beetles, which attracts a wide variety of birds. This is a semi-natural ancient woodland and is a favourite haunt of bird watchers; there are many summer visitors such as redstart and wood warbler.
Access to Grizedale Forest and the Grizedale Valley is easy, with many footpaths and bridlepaths running through the valley into Bowland.
